A small flurry of snowflakes

While I wait for the aspirin to take effect I thought I would post a few pictures of the royal icing snowflakes. The aspirin isn't just that my hand is a little sore, but I am not feeling all that great and even thought I would planning to fill the cakes today and frost tomorrow, not sure if I am up to it yet. Although I did take the cakes out of the freezer to thaw, so I can't wait too long to get the cake put together.

Royal Icing snowflakes are not exactly hard, but not all that easy either, sort of trial and error trying to get the right consistency of frosting, the right tip, the right design for the getting the perfect looking snowflake. Something I have been doing over that last two days and not sure I have mastered, but I think I have enough snowflake for my simple cake.

Once they dry then you have to make sure you can remove them from the plastic without breaking them. Not quite an easy feat, as you will see in the photos.

Several of the snowflakes did break here and there, but I am not too worried. I figured I could either carefully piece them together, or use them in the design as is.

I prepared the frosting the other day by tinting a soft blue, giving it a bit of color will hopefully give it a more festive flair and not a wedding flair I am trying to avoid.

Something that might help you with your snowflakes... when I did mine, I let them dry for 24 hours on a plastic wrap covered cookie sheet. I then pulled the plastic wrap from the sheet and flipped the wrap over so that the snowflakes were face down on the bare cookie sheet. I used a spatula or similar thin flat thing placed flat on the back of one of the snowflakes and pulled the plastic back flat against the spatula (sort of like those nifty stamp or sticker things do to separate the sticker from the paper). I then let the snowflakes dry for another 24 hours like that before I even considered moving them. This way the softer icing on the bottom has a chance to dry. My snowflakes ranged from 3/4" to 2", but yours seem bigger. You might have to wait a little longer. Hop this helps!

Thanks for the tips. I have plenty of icing left and thought I would make a few more. I think they just look big in the photos, the ones in the green pan are about 1", and seem to look the best. If I do make more I am definitely going to make them that size or smaller. Thanks Again!
